EcoFlow is taking aim at household energy bills with a new 5kWh home battery that stores solar power for when families need it most.

Britain's solar-powered homes are getting a new weapon in the battle against soaring energy costs, with EcoFlow launching a compact home battery designed to help households make more of their own electricity.

The tech giant has unveiled its new STREAM Series in the UK, promising a simpler route into home energy storage without requiring homeowners to start with a huge, complicated system.

The idea is straightforward – capture more of the electricity generated by solar panels during the day, store it in a battery and use it later when the sun has gone down.

Despite its hefty capabilities, the STREAM 5000 is surprisingly small.

The 5kWh battery weighs 45kg and is roughly the size of a cabin bag. EcoFlow says its compact design makes it up to 40% smaller than comparable solutions, meaning it can squeeze into spaces such as garages and utility rooms.

But this little battery packs a serious punch.

The STREAM 5000 can deliver up to 3,000W of AC output and accept up to 5,000W of solar input across four MPPTs. In everyday terms, that means it is designed to handle appliances including washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers.

For households already investing in solar panels, that could mean less of their precious home-generated electricity going to waste — and more being saved for later.

Start small, then power up

One of the biggest selling points is flexibility.

Homeowners don't have to install a massive energy-storage system from day one. They can begin with a single 5kWh battery and expand their setup as their energy demands grow.

With the EcoFlow STREAM Gateway, the system can become part of a wider home energy setup capable of supporting bigger demands, including EV charging and heat pumps.

Larger configurations are also possible, although these depend on the appropriate installation and grid-connection requirements.

The system is professionally installed by a certified electrician, meaning this isn't simply a case of plugging in a battery and hoping for the best.

EcoFlow is also promising plenty of tech under the bonnet.

A new Local Mode, due to arrive in September, is designed to keep the system operating and locally controllable even when the internet connection disappears. That's a useful safety net for homeowners who don't want their energy system going offline because of a broadband hiccup.

The STREAM Series also comes with IP65 weather protection, multi-layer safety features, a battery lifespan of up to 15 years, up to 10,000 charging cycles and a 10-year warranty.

Justin Tilley, Channel Lead, UK&E at EcoFlow, said the company wanted to make smarter home energy accessible beyond the early-adopter crowd.

“People don't buy watts - they buy confidence,” he said, arguing that homeowners want technology capable of powering everyday appliances while helping them get more value from their solar investment.

How much will it cost?

EcoFlow has announced early-bird pricing until Oct 6 of £1,599 for the STREAM 5000 and £1,499 for the STREAM AC 5000.

The launch comes as households increasingly look for ways to control when and how they use electricity.

For solar owners, the attraction is obvious. Instead of generating electricity during daylight hours and potentially sending surplus power away, a home battery provides another option – keeping it stored and used when the household actually needs it.

EcoFlow's pitch is therefore less about futuristic energy tech and more about making the humble home battery smaller, simpler and easier to expand.

For millions of UK households considering solar or already running panels, STREAM could offer a way to turn more sunshine into useful power – and potentially take another bite out of the electricity bill.
