'Why you should visit Sheffield Town Hall this weekend' - Reader's letter

Green Cllr Brian Holmshaw on making the most of Heritage Open Days in the city...

It was wonderful to attend one of the public guided tours of Meersbrook Hall led by the Friends of Meersbrook Hall last week as part of Heritage Open Days (HODS) in Sheffield. I must thank the Friends group, who exhaustively cleaned the hall over the previous weekend, and did a fantastic job of taking us round and making us all feel very welcome.

I have visited a number of properties over the ten days of Heritage Open Days, some open to the public for the first time, and would like to commend the work of the Heritage Open Days Sheffield team who have drawn the wide and varied programme of free activities together. This weekend is the last weekend to enjoy HODS this year. Search online for Sheffield Heritage Open Days.

Many great events this year, but can I put in a special plea to get along to Sheffield Town Hall on Saturday, September 19 10am to 3pm. It’s a free family-friendly open day for adults and young people designed to engage children and young people while exploring the building’s rich heritage. A heritage trail will reveal some of the secrets of the building, with a pop-up café providing refreshments.

It’s an opportunity to learn more about the Town Hall Refurbishment project and to share with staff and volunteers your ideas for the future of the building. I am particularly keen that the Town Hall serves all our city’s many and diverse communities as a community hub for all in Sheffield to come and meet together. Young people are especially encouraged to come on Saturday, to enjoy the activities and to help shape the future of this building.
