These photos take you back to 1961 in Sheffield, which was a momentous year for the city, as not one but two famous landmarks opened.
One of those landmarks, the iconic Park Hill flats, is still here today.
It has endured a turbulent history, with its Streets in the Sky initially hailed as the blueprint for the future of urban living, only for the dream to be blighted by antisocial behaviour.
It came close to being demolished before it was saved and underwent a dramatic renaissance, becoming once again one of Sheffield’s most sought-after addresses and being hailed as a brutalist masterpiece celebrated on stage and in song.
The other landmark, the Goodwin Fountain, at the top of Fargate, became one of the city’s most popular meeting places, with many a first date starting there, but was eventually demolished in 1998.
This retro photo gallery captures those two new arrivals as well as a notable departure, with Beauchief railway station closing that year.
The nostalgic images show how different some of the city’s most famous thoroughfares, including The Moor, West Street and Penistone Road, looked 65 years ago.
The memorable scenes pictured include people queuing for the polio vaccine, a young Marti Caine being crowned University Rag Queen, and an England legend occupying the crease at Bramall Lane when cricket was still played at the historic ground.
A brave Owls player is seen returning to Hillsborough after losing a leg in a coach crash, and Sheffield United are shown competing for a place in the FA Cup final.
These photos also take us inside the Batchelor Foods factory at Wadsley Bridge and the Hope & Anchor Brewery, and show the view back then from the top of the city’s steepest street.
Do these pictures bring back any memories for you of Sheffield in the 60s? What do you miss most about the city back then?
