But in Sheffield, there was one big story, as the red and blue halves of the city battled it out at Wembley for a place in the FA Cup final.
These photos take us back to 1993 and glory days for both Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday, who were both flying high in the Premier League.
The Owls took the honours at Wembley that year, beating the Blades in a thriller at Wembley before suffering heartbreak in the final against Arsenal after an extra-time winner in the replay.
This retro photo gallery captures the excitement of the FA Cup run for fans of both Sheffield clubs, who are pictured on their way to Wembley.
It also shows several lost landmarks of the 90s, including the famous Hole in the Road subway, Wards Brewery and the Don Valley Stadium.
Another landmark, one of the towering Hyde Park tower blocks, is pictured crashing down to earth in a controlled explosion, as onlookers watch from afar.
A young ‘Prince’ Naseem Hamed is seen in the ring, Mr Blobby is pictured meeting Dave Bassett at Bramall Lane, and Eddie ‘the Eagle’ Edwards is shown on the slopes of Sheffield Ski Village.
Do these photos bring back any happy memories of the 90s in Sheffield for you?
