Yorkshire Wildlife Park shut for fourth day after tiger tragedy

A joint police and Doncaster Council investigation is under way

Doncaster’s Yorkshire Wildlife Park will remain closed for a fourth day following the death of a man who was attacked by a tiger after entering its closure.

The park was closed following the tragedy on Saturday and was closed to visitors on Sunday and Monday and will remain shut today as police and City of Doncaster Council investigations into the death continue.

A message on the park’s ticket booking website says “closed” for today (October 13) with a message to visitors which reads: “We can confirm that a serious incident has occurred on Saturday at the tiger enclosure.

“Our emergency response procedures were immediately activated, and emergency services attended the scene.

“The park will be closed today whilst we are working closely with the authorities. The Yorkshire Hive will remain open as usual.

“The safety and wellbeing of our visitors, staff and animals remain our highest priority.”

A man died after climbing into the Land of The Tigers enclosure on Saturday afternoon, with shocking video footage showing him being fatally mauled by rare Amur tiger Altai.

An eyewitness described seeing the man wearing headphones and "pacing around" near the enclosure before he went in and was attacked. Police have confirmed that he was attending the park alone.

South Yorkshire Police said the man died at the scene and his family were being supported by officers. "Our thoughts are with them at this distressing time," the force said.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park said the tiger remained in the enclosure and would not be euthanised.

Flowers have been laid at the park’s gates while Doncaster’s mayor Ros Jones and and the city’s MPs have also paid tribute following the man’s death.

Yesterday, City of Doncaster Council confirmed a health and safety investigation had been launched.

Dan Swaine, Executive Director of Place at Doncaster Council, said: “We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred this weekend and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with everyone involved, including the family and loved ones of the individual who tragically lost their life, those that witnessed the incident and the staff involved at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, as well as the emergency services who provided a swift response.

“As the relevant licencing authority for the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, I can confirm that, in line with our statutory duties, the council has launched a health and safety investigation.

“We are also working with multiple agencies, including the police and health agencies, and are supporting the Yorkshire Wildlife Park in response to the incident.

“At this time, we won’t be commenting further on the individual or the investigation and we ask that the privacy of those involved is respected at this difficult time.”
