Why 'full scale brawl' called time on Sheffield club

Element Nightclub on Charter Row was closed by the courts after three men, including a 22-year-old, were allegedly stabbed in what was branded a ‘full scale brawl’.

October 2004 saw city councillors and police refuse an application for the venue to reopen.

Famously licensing chiefs decreed the club, which operated from 1978 to 1991, could not continue unless owners agreed never to allow The Sex Pistols to appear, such was the paranoia surrounding the anarchic punks.

Fiesta opened in August 1970 on Arundel Gate at a cost of £500,000 to create an impressive 1,300 seat amphitheatre.

The club reportedly attracted some massive names including Stevie Wonder, The Beach Boys and The Jackson 5.

The lights went out in 1980, despite new management's best efforts, after problems began four years earlier during a 17-day strike by workers wanting to unionise.

1992 saw the site become Odeon Cinema.

Roxy Disco, also on Arundel Gate, was stuff of Steel City legends. The two-floor massive building attracted such stars as Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan before becoming today's O2 Academy.

One year ago today saw the club, along with the likes of Josephines and Cairos, celebrated at Genting Club Eighties The Biggest Reunion launch of Big Hair Edition reissue of Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to 1980s Sheffield.
