In recent days pollution levels in the UK have been building as an area of high pressure has moved over the country,

Pollution levels are monitored and forecasted by the Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs (Defra).

Tomorrow’s forecast states: “Moderate to High levels of air pollution are forecast to persist during Wednesday.

“There is a risk of localised Very High levels developing in urban centres of northern England.”

Pollution levels are measured on a scale of 1-10 with 1 being ‘low’ and 10 ‘very high’.

The following health advice is in place for when levels are ‘high’: “Adults and children with lung problems, and adults with heart problems, should reducestrenuous physical exertion, particularly outdoors, and particularly if they experience symptoms.

People with asthma may find they need to use their reliever inhaler more often. Older people should also reduce physical exertion.”

When pollution is classed as ‘very high’ the following advice is in place for those with certain health problems: “Adults and children with lung problems, adults with heart problems, and older people, should avoid strenuous physical activity.

“People with asthma may find they need to use their reliever inhaler more often.”

In regards to the general population this advice is in place at times of ‘very high’ pollution: “Reduce physical exertion, particularly outdoors, especially if you experience symptoms such as cough or sore throat.”
