Volunteers needed for Sheffield's homeless Christmas shelter

The Sheffield charity, which has run a Christmas day shelter since 1989, is recruiting volunteers for its 2026 project and for set-up help on December 24.

Homeless and Rootless at Christmas (HARC) is asking for more volunteers to help deliver its 2026 Christmas project in Sheffield, with set-up support also needed on December 24.

The charity relies on volunteers to run its festive service, which will open its doors for six days this year from December 25 to 30.

Since 1989, HARC has provided a warm day shelter for homeless, rootless and vulnerable people in Sheffield over Christmas. The service offers hot meals, warm clothing, friendly company and wellbeing support during what the charity describes as one of the coldest and loneliest times of year.

HARC is funded entirely by donations and run by volunteers, and describes itself as being for Sheffield residents, by Sheffield residents.

People can apply as either kitchen volunteers or general volunteers, with shifts allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

More information about shifts, training and volunteering is available on HARC’s website at https://www.harcsheffield.org.uk/
