Tributes have been paid following the sudden death of a Doncaster firefighter and dad of two who was also the lead singer of a tribute band to Paul Weller and The Jam.

Calvin Dodd, a firefighter at Doncaster fire station, was also well-known in music circles as frontman of Setting Sons, an acclaimed tribute band performing the music of The Jam and lead singer Paul Weller as well as other Mod classics.

An appeal to raise funds for Mr Dodd’s family and funeral has already raised nearly £6,000.

A post on the Setting Sons Facebook page said: “It is with much sadness, shock and disbelief, that we mourn the loss of our great friend and leader of the band Calvin Dodd, who was suddenly taken from us yesterday afternoon.

“Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones, especially partner Rachel and children Courtney and Freddie as well as John, Karen, Simon, his niece, nephews and cousins, all of whom he loved very much.

“The world is already an emptier place without him and we will all miss his smile, energy and unquestionable willingness to help others.

“He was the ultimate showman, who loved entertaining people both on and off stage but selflessly shared the limelight with the rest of the band.

“On behalf of Calvin, we would like to thank everyone who has supported us over the last 20 years. You were one in a million buddy!”

The message was signed off by band members Caigy, Phil and Jenksy.

Mr Dodd, who was based at Doncaster Fire Station, was also described as a ‘fantastic firefighter and family man.’

Martin Reading, a friend of Calvin, said: “He was a fantastic firefighter and family man.

“Leaving us all far too soon but with many great memories as the popular man, we will all remember him for.

“We will all miss you forever, Cal”.

Alex Johnson, Chief Fire Officer of South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, said: “We would like to pass on our deepest condolences to Calvin’s family, colleagues and friends.

“He was a well-liked and valued member of Doncaster red watch where he had served for many years.

“We’re sure it will take time for staff who knew him to come to terms with this tragic news and, as a service, we are offering support wherever we can. Our thoughts remain with his loved ones whilst they deal with this terrible loss.”

The band, who performed all over Yorkshire and across England, are named after The Jam’s fourth album Setting Sons.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Calvin’s family with the funeral costs.
