The A57 Snake Pass between Sheffield and Manchester has been closed after deep snow made the road impassable, Derbyshire Police said this afternoon.

South Yorkshire Police, meanwhile, has urged drivers to avoid the A628 Woodhead Pass which also connects the two cities.

Tweeting at around 2pm, SYP Barnsley said: “***Avoid A628 Woodhead pass due to snow*** #snowday #alps #fatal4 #roadclosed.”

Drivers have also urged other motorists to take care, with Dr Ruth Allen tweeting: “WARNING to #PeakDistrict folk. Avoid all roads around Sheffield entry, Froggatt, Curbar etc. I have just got back from riding and the roads are treacherous. No grit etc. I drove back doing 20mph in 2nd. #snow @Derbyshirecc @peakdistrict.”

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow, covering Sheffield, which is in place until 9pm today, Friday, December 4.

It says collisions are more likely due to ‘tricky driving conditions’.
