However, rail users have been warned to expect changes to the services over the coming days as recovery work is still ongoing.

The statement said: "Due to the extent of the damage caused by the removal of the derailed freight wagons, it is expected that disruption on all routes through Sheffield will be experienced until the end of the week.

Around 2:45am on Wednesday, a freight service carrying cement derailed at the north end of Sheffield station whilst on route from Hope to Dewsbury.

The incident has caused significant damage to both the tracks and the signalling system and substantial repairs need to be carried out. This can only be done after the derailed train is removed.

On Wednesday, only three of the eight platforms at Sheffield station have been available for use, which means that there has been major disruption to Northern, TransPennine Express, CrossCountry and East Midlands Railway services.

Two more platforms were expected to reopen for the start of service today (November 12).

Whilst this will reduce disruption, there will still be changes to services, particularly for Northern and East Midlands Railway's passengers. Both CrossCountry and TransPennine Express are expecting to be able to run a full service tomorrow.

Network Rail will also make an announcement later this week about when repairs are expected to complete and all platforms are able to reopen.

CrossCountry service is running as usual today but trains may be subject to delays to congestion.

TransPennine Express is also running through Sheffield but is also subject to delays.

Buses will replace trains between the following locations:

Sheffield - Meadowhall – buses depart every 15 minutes between these stations

Sheffield - Doncaster – a half hourly bus service has been provided between these stations, calling at all intermediate stations.

Sheffield - Nottingham – an hourly bus service has been provided between these stations.

Sheffield - York (via Pontefract) - all trains replaced by buses.
