National Rail reveal how long travel chaos will last after train derails near Sheffield

Rail users have been warned to expect disruption all day after a freight train derailed north of Sheffield in the early hours of this morning.

Services have been cancelled or are subject to delays following the 3am incident, which did not involve any other trains.

Services operated by CrossCountry; East Midlands Railway; Northern and TransPennine Express are impacted.

National Rail said: “A freight train has derailed just north of Sheffield, resulting in some platforms being blocked at the station.

“Please allow for delays, cancellations and alterations to your journey this morning. You may need to use a replacement bus service to complete your journey.

“Disruption is expected to last until at least the end of service today.”

CrossCountry trains are running via Sheffield but services may be delayed due to congestion at Sheffield due to a limited number of platforms being available.

East Midlands Railway services between Liverpool Lime Street and Norwich are calling at Sheffield.

A reduced hourly train service will run between Sheffield and London St Pancras International.

A shuttle bus service will operate between Sheffield and Chesterfield.

Northern said a number of its services are affected.

A limited service will run between Leeds and Nottingham; the Leeds - Sheffield via Barnsley service will run between Leeds and Meadowhall; the Leeds - Sheffield via Moorthorpe will run between Leeds and Meadowhall; the Sheffield - Huddersfield service will run between Barnsley and Huddersfield; the Sheffield - Lincoln service is cancelled and has been replaced by road transport; the Sheffield - Scarborough service will run between Doncaster and Scarborough; Sheffield - Doncaster services are all cancelled and Sheffield - York services are cancelled.

Sheffield - Manchester services will run as scheduled.

The company is advising passengers not to travel if possible.

TransPennine Express services between Cleethorpes and Manchester Airport are running.
