Shortly before 7.30pm it said the road was reopening fully, though motorists were warned to expect long delays with tailbacks stretching for 3.5 miles at one point.

South Yorkshire Police said it was called at 4.43pm to reports of a collision between an HGV and a grey BMW estate car in lane one of the carriageway.

A spokeswoman for the force said one man had been airlifted to hospital following the crash with injuries which were not believed to be life-threatening.
