Police issue statement after motorway crash closes M1 a few miles from Sheffield
Motorway closed northbound after serious incident this morning involving van and car
Emergency services expect the M1 to remain closed northbound “for some time” after a serious crash this morning, a few miles from Sheffield.
Police and ambulance personnel were sent to a crash involving a car and a van earlier this morning, with the air ambulance among those deployed to the scene.
Derbyshire Constabulary said in a statement: “The northbound carriageway of the M1 between J29 and J29A is closed following a road traffic collision involving a car and a van at just after 9am this morning (Monday 19 October).

“The road is expected to remain shut for some time. The southbound carriageway remains open.
“Motorists are advised to please use alternative routes at this time whilst emergency services deal with the incident.”
National Highways said the motorway was initially closed in both directions between J29 for Mansfield and J29A for Chesterfield - a section of the motorway just a few minutes from Sheffield, adding that the air ambulance was among emergency services sent to the scene.
A spokesman said earlier: “The M1 between J29 and J29A is currently held in both directions to allow emergency services to reach the scene of an incident.
“The air ambulance is also due to attend the scene. The incident occurred on the northbound carriageway. All emergency services and National Highways traffic officers are at the scene.
At that stage, there were delays of 60 minutes on the northbound M1, and delays of 10 minutes on the southbound approach to J29A.
