A resident’s video showed how the bus appeared to attempt a right turn off Abbey Lane onto a residential lane, close to the junction of Beauchief Abbey Lane, possibly to return to its route at the roundabout with Hutcliffe Wood Road.

However, the bus became caught on a grass verge, where the rear-wheel-drive vehicle could not gain purchase.

Two police officers arrived to assist.

When the driver tried to accelerate, white smoke billowed out of the bus’ exhaust pipe to no avail.

A bus engineer arrived and steered the bus back onto Abbey Lane. A resident said the bus was able to drive away after some checks.
