The 19 Sheffield streets cars could be towed away on as council plans to install cycle storage units

Cars could be towed away

Special powers could be brought in allowing Sheffield Council to tow cars away if they get in the way of plans to build new bike storage sheds on streets in Sheffield.

Sheffield Council has issued a public notice warning residents they are planning to bring in the special traffic orders on the 19 streets affected by the plans.

The Cycle Hangar Installation (Prohibition of Vehicles) Order will give officials the power to remove any vehicle parked at any of the locations listed because of council plans to install cycle hangars.

If the order is made, it would come into operation on November 2, 2026 and will remain in force for four weeks.

It could also be extended if the Government approved it.

The order would ban cars from parking along parts of the 19 roads during the installation phase, although it states that residents will still be able to access their homes.

Sheffield Council’s website states: “We’ve had hundreds of requests from Sheffield residents for secure cycle parking.

“We’ve already installed cycle hangars in neighbourhoods across the city and we’re continuing to expand the project so that more people can securely store a bike close to home.”

Cycle hangars provide secure, long-term cycle parking to make it easier, quicker, and more convenient to ride a bike regularly. For an annual fee of £72, you can rent your own individual cycle space for as long as you need it.

“We want to make cycling easier for more people. To do this, we usually install hangars on residential streets, close to homes - especially in areas where people don’t have a drive or garage. We prioritise locations based on the number of requests we receive, how close the location is to homes and high-density housing, how close it is to current or planned cycle routes and how close it is to city or district centres.”

The council added: “If there are parking restrictions (like permit bays), we may need to change Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs). This legal process can take six to nine months and adds cost.

“We’ll write to residents near proposed locations with more details. If a hangar goes ahead, we’ll provide updates about installation.

“The project is backed by the UK Government with funding specifically allocated for walking, wheeling and cycling projects. Extra funding from the Clean Air Zone will support the project.”
