Sheffield councillor slams 'lack of understanding' over closure of bus stops at Atkinsons
“Passengers finding themselves at Moorfoot face a long walk to a suitable bus stop. This is a huge disincentive to visiting the Moor or travelling by bus.”
A councillor has complained about the closure of two bus stops outside Atkinsons in Sheffield.
Barabara Masters said the failure to update drivers and passengers about alternatives to the stops on Charter Row showed a “total lack of understanding of the needs of passengers.”

The stops outside the department store on Charter Row are suspended due to roadworks set to last until the end of June 2027.
Coun Masters said it wasn’t clear to passengers that they were closed, or the alternatives, which she believed were outside Primark further up Charter Row, or near Waitrose on the other side of Moore Street roundabout.
She added: “Passengers finding themselves at Moorfoot face a long walk to a suitable bus stop. This is a huge disincentive to visiting the Moor or travelling by bus.
“Some drivers will stop to pick up passengers at another stop on Charter Row. Others tell me they have been instructed not to. “

In an email to SYMCA, Coun Masters said: “Can action be taken as a matter of urgency to make clear to all drivers and passengers where the alternative stops are to be, including a map?
“I fear the failure to carry out this step when the works have been known about for some time shows a total lack of understanding for the needs of the passengers which our bus network should serve.”
A SYMCA spokesperson said: “We’re really sorry that some passengers have not had access to the information they needed at the affected bus stops. We have listened to these concerns, and staff are visiting the stops to check that signage remains clear and in place.
“Signage was placed on both stops before the improvement works starting on Charter Row to explain the changes, with further information available on the Travel South Yorkshire website.
“Drivers at the relevant depots have also been informed of the changes.”
