Soldiers were deployed to Doncaster earlier this week after large parts of the town were flooded when one month’s worth of rain fell in 24 hours.

They have distributed sand bags, built temporary flood defences and have shored up river banks.

Today, troops were praised by South York Fire and Rescue for their efforts to help firefighters with an operation to restore power to the severely flooded village of Fishlake.

Soldiers spent yesterday constructing a barrier of sandbags around a power distribution building, to enable firefighters to pump out water so that power could be restored.

In a tweet, SYFR said: “Thanks to the efforts of our firefighters, alongside military and utilities, we managed to restore power to half the homes in Fishlake yesterday, which had been without it for several days.”
