Three abandoned vehicles removed from the roads in Park Hill, Sheffield after resident's campaign

They have now been moved

Three abandoned vehicle have been removed from the Park Hill area after a resident brought his concerns to The Star.

Frank Bussey said the two cars and a light truck had gone after a campaign lasting weeks.

They were: a Ford Focus on School Lane, a Black VW on Duke Street, and a Mitsubishi Fuso truck on Blagden Street.

Mr Bussey contacted The Star after complaining to Sheffield City Council and the DVLA.

But he said abandoned vehicles without tax or MOT obstructing footpaths and roads was a growing problem, in areas including Park Hill and Attercliffe.

He said: “All three vehicles have now been removed which is a great step forward.

“But there is a growing problem of unregulated car repair outfits using the public highway to store their scrap, untaxed and untested vehicles.

“I do not understand why anyone needs to report such problems as surely council officials and police pass these areas regularly.”

Sheffield City Council has a legal duty under the Refuse Disposal (Amenity) Act 1978 to remove vehicles deemed to be abandoned on public roads, highways, and open land.

Previously, Coun Mark Rusling, chair of the environment services and regulation policy committee at Sheffield City Council, said they were writing to two of the keepers - who were required to respond with 10 days - and removing one of the vehicles in the next few days.

He added: “It’s against the law to abandon your vehicle and it’s your responsibility to keep it correctly.

“When a vehicle is reported to us, we run checks with South Yorkshire Police and the DVLA to check who the owner is.

“This takes time, but we do move vehicles as quickly as we can as it’s our responsibility to remove them if an owner doesn’t come forward.”
