Following the announcement, SYP said: “For you, the public, this means remaining alert but not alarmed.

“Within policing we will continue to work, day and night, to keep you safe.

“If you see anything that doesn't feel right, report via gov.uk/ACT. Always call 999 in an emergency.”

The UK terrorism threat level was raised to "severe" by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre after two Jewish men were stabbed in an incident in Golders Green, London, the day before.

It is the latest in a number of incidents where the Jewish community has been targeted.

Both men injured in the attack have now been discharged from hospital.

The head of the Metropolitan Police, Sir Mark Rowley, has warned that Jews were facing a "ghastly Venn diagram" of hate from all sides, and warned antisemitism was a growing threat to their safety because of social media, in an interview with the Times.

Speaking to the Times, Sir Mark said: "Every racist or extremist or terrorist group has a list of people they hate because they all create an 'other' who they want to blame everything on and visit everything on.

"The ghastly fact is that Jews are on everybody's list, all of those hateful groups, whether you're extreme right, whether you're extreme left, whether you're Islamist terrorist, whether you're right-wing terrorist, and some hostile states as well now with some sort of Iranian-related threats. There's a ghastly Venn diagram that they're at the middle of."

Sir Mark told the Times that British Jews are facing their greatest ever threat in the wake of a recent spates of attacks on their community.

On Saturday, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch criticised Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for his lack of action on tackling antisemitism.

She told broadcasters during a visit to south-east London: "I heard the Prime Minister give an interview this morning where he didn't seem to know what to do about it.

"Enough with the platitudes, we need action. We need to shame people who think antisemitism is acceptable."
