South Yorkshire athlete in hunt for world championship spot

Pole vaulter Adam Hague (City of Sheffield/Dearne) is as certain of selection as anyone. He has exceeded the qualifying mark of 5.25 and so a win would give him automatic selection. Not that Hague can rest on his laurels. Middlesbrough’s Charlie Myers also has the qualifying mark and has beaten Hague in the past. With the selectors able to pick two per event, subject to the qualifying conditions, the likelihood is that both will go to Poland.

Other Sheffield athletes aiming for titles are James Gormley in the 1500m and Abigail Roberts in the women’s pole vault. Rotherham’s Lee Thompson, who won the Northern title last week, is highly ranked in the 400m whilst Chesterfield sisters Alicia and Ella Barrett, in the first year of the age group, are contenders in the 100 hurdles and 400m. Sprinters Billie-Jo Harris (Roth) and Eleanor Rawson (Sheffield) are listed in the sprints whilst Hallamshire’s Cameron Bell goes for the 80m.

The U23 championships are also on the programme with Sheffield sprinters Elliott Hurley and Ben Shields in the 100m and team mate Joe Lancaster in the 800m.

The third round matches in the UK Youth Development League (u15 and u13) take place on Sunday.

In Northern Premier 1 Sheffield (5th) and Chesterfield (6th) are trailing.

Chesterfield look certain for relegation but Sheffield are well capable of in improvement in the final two matches. Their fixture is in Manchester.

Rotherham, last in Northern Premier 2, are at Darlington. In Northern East 1 Hallamshire, second, and Doncaster, third, travel to Middlesbrough.
