SNOW ALERT: Weather warning issued for Sheffield as 'Beast from the East' heads towards UK

BIG FREEZE: Is Sheffield about to see a repeat of epic record-breaking blizzard which buried city under two feet of snow in 2010?A high pressure system nicknamed the 'Beast from the East' will dominate our weather for the next week bringing freezing cold temperatures from Siberia.

The yellow warning has been issued for much of the country, particularly east of the Pennines.

BEAST FROM THE EAST: Gritting teams out in force as Sheffield prepares for big freezeThe warning states: "Showers or longer periods of snow will affect eastern parts of the UK during Tuesday.

"There is the potential for travel delays on roads, with some stranded vehicles and passengers, as well as delays or cancellations to rail and air travel.

"Some rural communities could become cut off. Power cuts may also occur."

A danger to life and colder than Iceland: How cold will it get and when will the Beast from the East arrive in Yorkshire?Meanwhile, Streets Ahead - the highway contract run by Amey on behalf of Sheffield City Council - say the are prepared for the bad weather.

Lynsey Connelly, Amey Highways Operations Manager said: “We monitor the weather and road conditions 24/7 during the winter months and are prepared to deal with snow clearance if the reports of snow are correct. We also have over 2,000 grit bins across the city for members of the public to use.”

She added: “We urge people to check the weather forecast regularly, take extra care if they are out and about and if driving, to drive appropriately for the conditions and allow extra time for journeys.”
