Sheffield Wednesday: Why Jos Luhukay chose Steven Fletcher ahead of Atdhe Nuhiu

Steven Fletcher took advantage of fellow striker Atdhe Nuhui's absence to force his way into Sheffield Wednesday's first team, manager Jos Luhukay has revealed.

Fletcher impressed Luhukay in training while Nuhiu was away with Kosovo during the international break.

The 31-year-old was chosen to start last Saturday's 2-2 home draw against Stoke City, with Nuhui, who had been in the Owls line-up before the two-week rest from Championship action, dropped to the bench.

Luhukay was also mindful that Fletcher had played a full part in Wednesday's preparation for the Potters during the time Nuhiu was missing from the club's Middlewood training complex.

"In the last 10 days, we trained every day with our plan and with video clips and how we like to play," Luhukay said after goals from Marco Matias and Barry Bannan had seen his side overturn an early two-goal deficit at Hillsborough.

"Steven was also very good in the training sessions in the last 10 days. Atdhe was not there."

Fletcher played the full match against the Potters and Nuhiu came on as a 68th-minute substitute for first-half scorer Marco Matias, a quarter of an hour before Bannan struck the equaliser with a stunning free-kick.

The Owls, up to ninth in the table after taking 10 points from their last four fixtures, head to Nottingham Forest on Wednesday evening and Luhukay reassured Nuhiu that the giant centre-forward is still in his thinking.

"Atdhe knows how much respect I have for him," the boss said. "He came good in the game to help us get a draw.

"In the next games, we make new decisions."
