Sheffield police officer ‘jumped into freezing river’ to try and save uncle and nephew

Tommy and Josh Hydes were travelling in a white Mercedes GLS when the car ploughed through railings on Meadowhall Way on Saturday night and plunged into the water of the River Don below.

Firefighters recovered the car from the water, with the two men still inside, and they were taken to hospital but despite the efforts of medics were pronounced dead a short time later.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision continues today.

A witness who observed the rescue mission praised the bravery of a police officer, who she said jumped into the river and swam to the car before others arrived at the scene.

She said firefighters also entered the freezing water and attempted to smash the car windows in an effort to free the men inside.

Describing the rescue mission, which she said lasted around one and a half hours, said said: “We saw firefighters running into the water and trying to break through the windows, they had ropes attached to the the car and all you could hear was ‘pull’.

“I think the policeman that arrived first on the scene jumped in himself to the car and was there first – brave.

“The car was upside down so you could only see the wheels. The river was running quite fast so I can imagine that would make it more difficult.”

She added: “Such a sad, distressing moment to watch. Felt hopeless but knew time was ticking as you only have so long don’t you.

“Sent goosebumps down my spine. I just wanted something to happen quick to try and save whoever was in the car.”

Social media sites have been flooded with tributes to the two men who lost their lives in the crash.

Tommy, aged 24, who was 20-year-old Josh’s uncle, became a father three months ago.

Josh, a former Aston Academy student, had recently passed his accountancy exams.
