A documentary including stories from The Star has been released amid the worsening rental and housing crises.

A new documentary named ‘Project Peter Pan: The cost of housing’ is exposing the impact the rental crisis is having on individuals in the so-called “lost generation”.

The free programme is now live and available to watch online on the Shots! website.

Its release comes just after new data from the Office of National Statistics showed one in 10 private renters in Sheffield have been affected by rising costs.

The figures show that the increased cost, from £719 to £785 on average, accounts for 31 per cent of these renters' household disposable income.

The new ONS analysis also shows 14 per cent of homeowners in Sheffield were remortgaging in 2023.

It is no secret that wages have not been keeping up with increasing house prices, trapping many young adults in a rent cycle and hindering their ability to save.

In March, National World - including The Star and its 16 city world division news titles - launched Project Peter Pan: championing the lost generation.

The project aims to use our collective media power in the run-up to a general election to give a voice to those in their 20s and 30s.

Frozen out of the housing ladder and stuck in a rental cycle often in substandard accommodation, many are in debt and facing impossible decisions.
