South Yorkshire Police declined to say how many officers were involved in the security operation or how much it was expected to cost.

But Superintendent Paul McCurry, silver commander for the Question Time event, said: "As with all events of this kind, we are working closely with our partners and have committed the necessary resources to ensure a safe environment for everybody involved in the broadcast and minimise any impact on our local communities."

Boris Johnson, Jeremy Corbyn, Jo Swinson and Nicola Sturgeon are due to take part in the debate tonight.

The live programme, hosted by Fiona Bruce, will air on BBC One from 7pm to 9pm.
