"There were lots of comments about her voting against protecting the NHS, asking her to explain herself. Out of about 40 comments there’s now only about five positive ones. The rest are gone.

"She deleted her Twitter account shortly after the general election and she’s very selective about the emails she responds to. Constituents feel silenced and censored. She doesn't like to be held to account or scrutinised."

Ms Cates said she took her duty to her constituents very seriously and always prioritised those who needed her help.

She said: "Throughout the coronavirus pandemic this has included people needing help accessing financial support, support with their employers, support in getting childcare and support for their businesses.

"I, with my team, have responded to thousands of emails, letters and phone calls, helping to resolve the issues that people face."

Regarding the Facebook comments, she added: "I am clear on Facebook that I cannot respond to individual questions and comments.

"However, any constituents who need my help can contact me by email and the address is publicised widely."
