Alex Moore, owner of Hygge Coffee Shop, on Fitzalan Square, submitted an application for a licence to Sheffield Council and the sub licensing committee is set to make a decision next week.

In the application, Mr Moore said: “Hygge Cafe serves sandwiches, pizzas and cakes. The cafe currently serves coffees, hot drinks and cold drinks. With a successful licence application the cafe would extend this offering to include beer and wine. The cafe will not serve spirits or short alcoholic drinks, other than for specific events.

“The intention is to offer customers alcoholic refreshments as an alternative to current offerings throughout the later hours of the day (mostly 16:00 - 23:00).

“Alcoholic sales would be all premium, retailing premium bottled beer at around £5 - £6 per bottle and wine at £6 - £9 per glass. The alcohol sales would compliment the food sales.”

The cafe - which takes its name from the Danish word hygge meaning a feeling of cosiness and comfortable conviviality - opened in November last year.

Mr Moore's application requested the licence cover sales throughout the opening hours and later opening hours beyond midnight on New Year’s Eve.

The application also stated the drinks on offer may reflect seasonal activities such as mulled wine during the festive period and fruit cider in summer.

A council report said it was recieved in February but a decision was postponed three times due to restrictions in place for covid19.

The sub licensing meeting will start from 2pm on Tuesday, July 28 and will be available for the public to watch via a webcast link here http://democracy.sheffield.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=155&MId=7621
