A motion to be debated at Sheffield Council will back the Government’s accelerated plans for a National Care Service and stronger pay and conditions for care staff, while pressing ministers to go further in protecting migrant care workers.

Labour councillors will seek to gain cross-party support in backing Unison’s campaign to end workers’ dependence on a single employer for visa sponsorship and protect the five-year route to permanent settlement for those already here.

Councillor Ruth Milsom, Labour‘s spokesperson for health on Sheffield Council, who is proposing the motion, said: “Families need to know that support will be there, and the people providing it deserve pay and conditions that recognise the skill and responsibility of their work.”
