The warehouses are the second phase of Harworth’s Gateway 36 scheme, which when complete, could provide up to 2,500 jobs.

The 1.1 million sq ft of logistics and manufacturing space is set across 95 acres of land at the former Rockingham Colliery.

Phase one of the scheme included Taco Bell, Dunkin Donuts, Environment Agency and Car Supermarket.

The initial earthworks for the land is now complete, according to Harworth, and the three new units should be ready for occupation later this year.

The warehouses have been approved for ‘speculative employment uses’, including industrial, storage and distribution and office space.

The total floor space will be 10,000 sqm, and access would be taken from a new road off Shortwood Roundabout.

All three units are proposed to be of neutral greens and grey cladding, and developers say they will of-set the loss of biodiversity with ‘large areas of woodland, scrub, and meadow’, as well as planing mature trees and hedgerows.

During yesterday’s (January 18) planning meeting, councillor Margaret Bruff asked if a crossing could be installed on the parkway for pedestrians to safely cross the dual carriageway.

Speaking after the meeting, Councillor Robert Frost, cabinet support member for regeneration and culture told the local democracy reporting service that more than 150 jobs have already been created as part of phase one.

“We’re looking at about 1.3 million square feet of speculative planning requests in the next couple of years for that site.

“Barnsley has experienced record levels of property take-up, and expansion of local companies, and investment recently.

“We’ve created 922 new jobs so far this financial year.

“In Hoyland we’ve spent £17m with the roads, so we’ve got good access for that area, because that’s what firms want.

“Hermes are coming this year, there’s going to be 1,400 jobs created there. Plus another 300 temporary at busy times, and there’s some very skilled jobs coming to the area.”
