Fargate Container Park Sheffield: Obtrusive eyesore or looking great - mixed views a week from opening
and on Freeview 262 or Freely 565
The Container Park at the top of Fargate has now really taken shape – but views of the new feature which is due to open in just over a week were divided among those walking past it this week.
Asked what she thought of the new structure, which sees shipping containers used to create a food area at the top of what has traditionally been one of Sheffield’s busiest shopping areas, Jane Scott, from Heeley, said: “I think it’s a good idea, but I think with it all being run-down around Fargate, will people use it?”

Pete Tippett, from Norton, thought it was in the wrong place. He said: “I think it looks great, but just not here. I think if you plonk that somewhere else, apart from right in the middle of Sheffield. I like designs like this, but it’s just not the right place for it.”
Eoin McDonnell-Brookes, from Sheffield, did not think he was likely to use it. He said: “I think it’s a bit obtrusive and it doesn’t really fit in with the environment of the place.”
Martha Hart, of Nether Edge, was supportive of the building – but did not think it would improve Fargate, where she would like to see shops full of people.

She said: “I quite like it actually. I think the little green wall panels on the side make it pop-out and I like the juxtaposition of the old and the new.”

Site manager Simon Tomlinson told the Star recently he expected the Container Park to open on Friday, October 14.
Mr Tomlinson added: “We just can’t wait to open now, it’s been that long. Once the screen goes up it will really start to take shape.”
All seven food vendors were still on board, he added.
The development of eight containers was due to open for the women’s Euros in July.
