Grange Landfill Site, also known as Droppingwell Tip, has been inactive for more than 20 years, but the Environment Agency issued a permit variation in 2016 that allowed Grange Landfill Ltd to use the site for landfill once again.

Work in preparation for the site’s re-opening began in September 2019, but were suspended in November due to ‘poor ground conditions’.

Although the works restarted, they were again paused in December 2021, ‘as the operator required the plant and equipment on another site’.

A new document from the Environment Agency states that they ‘expect the operator to re-commence activities on site early in 2022’, although no date has yet been confirmed.

Sarah Champion, Rotherham’s MP told the local democracy reporting service: “I have opposed the reopening of Droppingwell Tip since the permit variation was issued by the Environment Agency in 2016.

“In that time, I have called repeatedly on the Environment Agency to rescind the permit, but they have refused to do so.

“It is outrageous that the variation was issued without any consultation whatsoever, and I strongly believe the EA should reconsider this appalling decision.

“I have also raised the tip in Parliament and have pleaded with the Conservative Government time and again to step in to prevent its reopening.

“Sadly, ministers have declined to stand by Rotherham residents and have dismissed all my requests out of hand.

“I strongly believe that the tip should not be permitted to reopen and I will continue to explore any and all options to stop it from going ahead.”
