Sheffield leisure centre upgrades moving forward at a cost of £62.1m

Refurbishment plans for Hillsborough Leisure Centre are set to cost £11m

Refurbishment plans for Hillsborough Leisure Centre are set to cost £11m – some £40.1m less than Springs Leisure Centre across Sheffield which is being totally rebuilt.

Sheffield City Council is now planning to go ahead with upgrades to the building on Beulah Road, starting next year. Originally the work was planned to begin in 2030.

The council’s finance and performance policy committee will be asked to sign off on the spending proposals next Monday (October 19).

A report to the committee said that feasibility studies carried out in conjunction with council leisure operator Everyone Active “determined that a full rebuild of Hillsborough is not necessary and the same benefits can be achieved through a refurbishment, which presents a more cost-effective approach and removes the need to close the venue for two years”.

The building will no longer have to close for two years. Phased delivery aims to minimise disruption.

Everyone Active has already spent £500,000 upgrading the gym and spin cycle studio.

Councillors will also be asked to approve the budget to rebuild Springs Leisure Centre in East Bank Road, Arbourthorne. The building will be renamed the Uriah Rennie Leisure Centre after the city’s late pioneering Premiership football referee.

The contract for the rebuild is now ready to be awarded to Willmott Dixon Construction Ltd. The overall budget is £51.1m.

“The new leisure centre is expected to be complete and open September 2028 with demolition of the previous building and remediation of the site to complete by March 2029,” said the report.

Both projects are part of an update of city sports and leisure facilities.
