Maguire, a day after guiding The Reds, to a 6-2 thumping of Leeds, was out in his boyhood home of Mosborough handing out food boxes to isolated pensioners in the run up to Christmas.

Flanked by brother Joe, sister Daisy and mum Zoe, the Maguire family who still live in the area, wanted to give something back to the community.

One of the recipients were couple Alan and Brenda Burton who spoke to Maguire from their doorstep.

Brenda, aged 71, said: “We were hoping for family to come up for Christmas so it’s nice for him to do this for us.

“It’s really thoughtful of him, he’s a local lad and he’s not forgotten where he’s from. He’s a smashing family man and his parents have brought him up right. They should be very proud of him”

“It’s absolutely wonderful, it’s such a nice gesture from him to think of us during this time. Lockdown has been frightening and upsetting – some days are worse than others so to get something like this is really nice.”

Speaking after the food hamper drop-offs, Maguire said: “It’s about spreading some festive cheer, helping out the community and putting some smiles on people’s faces.

“It’s tough times for everyone, tough times for the village not just Mosborough but it’s nice to give back to where I grew up and I have a lot of memories here.

“I still have strong memories of growing up here as a kid, played countless hours of football around the place and it’s so important to me to stick to my roots, stay humble and to give something back.
