Police have issued a statement after a serious collision on the M1 near Sheffield.

The collision happened around 7.30pm this evening between junctions 30 for Barlborough and 31 for Aston.

The police, ambulance and fire services are all currently at the scene an a diversion is in place.

Motorists are being advised not to join the motorway network and plan alternative routes, with the closure expected to be in place for several hours.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Emergency services are currently dealing with a collision on the M1 Northbound, close to Woodhall Services.

"Police were called at 7.29pm with reports that a vehicle had left the carriageway and collided with trees at the side of the motorway.

"The motorway is currently closed in both directions whilst emergency services carry out their work.
