A top politician has urged people to walk their dogs ‘as near home as possible’ during the coronavirus lockdown.

Under new Government regulations to prevent the spread of Covid-19, people should now only go out when absolutely necessary for food, medicine, work or exercise, always try to stay two metres apart and not meet others outside their household, even friends and family.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has today issued advice in response to police targeting people who head to beauty spots for walks.

He told the BBC: “The simple thing is, if at all possible, please take exercise close to your home.

“I’ve got dogs and, rather than put them in the car and drive somewhere with them, it’s about stepping out of the house and walking them around the block, or whatever it requires.

“It is that message of not making the unnecessary journeys, which most people are not doing, which is why we have the quietest transport network in modern history at the moment.

“I know you can point to these individual examples and say ‘well, did the police go too far with this particular action?' I think there is a danger there of using the exception to prove the rule.

“The best advice is not to jump in your car to go somewhere to walk your dog.

“Whether the police action was a little bit too strong or not is the secondary issue to the primary thing that most people are adhering to, which is please stay home, please don’t go travelling unnecessarily.”
