Bluebell was discovered cold, alone and ‘utterly petrified’, according to the South Yorkshire-based charity Helping Yorkshire Poundies, which said she had been running around an industrial estate for several days as she was too frightened to be caught.

The charity said she is a Cane Corso cross, who, like many of her breed, had suffered the ‘barbaric’ practice of ear-cropping and tail-docking.

Bluebell is expected to give birth any day now and the charity is urgently seeking donations towards her care.

"We don't know what kind of life she's had – or where she's come from – but what we DO KNOW is that she's SAFE NOW,” it said.

“We've got you now, Bluebell. We'll take 1st class care of you, and your puppies – and we'll ensure they all get 5* homes.”
