A spokeswoman for the force said: “The pig is now safe and being looked after by officers whilst they conduct enquiries to locate its owners.

"If you have any information that might help our officers re-unite the pig with its rightful owners then please call 101 quoting incident number 376 of April 6.”

Louise Tarleton, who works at Jiraffe, on Wardsend Road, said the pig had trotted down the road and into its car park at around 12.30pm today.

She said staff had closed the gate so the animal, which has an old wound on one of its ears, couldn’t escape.

"It's very friendly and has been following us around on our breaks,” she added.

According to the RSPCA, Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs, which are popular as pets, are a miniature breed which are smaller than commercially farmed pigs but can grow to 70kg or more than 150kg if overfed.
