Michael Vaughan backs Harry Maguire as England defender appeals Greek conviction

Former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan has voiced his support for fellow Sheffielder Harry Maguire, who is appealing against his conviction at a Greek court.

The England and Manchester United defender, who was born in Mosborough and played for Sheffield United, was this week handed a 21-month suspended prison sentence after being convicted of assaulting a police offer and attempted bribery.

But his legal team has lodged an appeal against the Red Devils captain’s conviction, and his brother Laurence has said there is ‘no chance’ of an apology being issued.

Former England batsman Michael Vaughan tweeted: “Harry Maguire is one guy I wouldn’t throw under the bus... he is as down to earth as they come with a close family.”

A Manchester United spokesman has said the filing of an appeal ‘extinguishes the initial court verdict and nullifies the conviction’ and will lead to a full retrial in a more senior court.
