The ex-Leeds United frontman was covering the Yorkshire derby at Bramall Lane for talkSPORT on Sunday, September 27, but nearly missed the appointment after being held up on the way to the ground.

The 36-year-old had stopped to help after seeing an 85-year-old woman who had taken a ‘nasty fall’ near the stadium.

He stayed with her until an ambulance arrived, and despite missing the start of the programme he still made it in time for kick-off.

The Whites legend told talkSPORT: “I was driving here to Bramall Lane and I saw a little old lady laying face down on the floor. Unfortunately she’d tripped and hit her head on the floor so I pulled over and helped her out.”

“I waited for the ambulance to get there and saw her off. Hopefully she’s OK and she makes a full recovery."

The woman’s daughters have publicly thanked Mr Beckford and another man who also stopped to help after the fall on Queens Road, at the bottom of Myrtle Road.

They are still trying to track down the second man so they can thank him personally for helping their mother, Shirley Hodkin, who they said was ‘shaken and sore but will be OK’.

Mr Beckford has been widely praised on social media, with one person calling him a ‘lovely bloke’ and another describing his actions as ‘pure class’.
