Human waste found after travellers set up illegal site at sports centre

They set up camp in the grounds of Killamarsh Sports Centre last week, causing some concern in the local community.

The travellers were reported to Derbyshire Constabulary and North East Derbyshire Council and the group was ordered to leave.

But Killamarsh parish councillor, Stephen Clough, said a clean-up operation was necessary afterwards.

Posting on Facebook on Tuesday, he said: “The travellers have now safely left the site and the parish council is working closely with North East Derbyshire District Council to carry out a thorough clean up, this has already started early this morning.

“There is still more work to do, please be advised that there are currently areas around the site where human waste can be found, this will need to be moved and area cleaned in an appropriate manner.”

In a statement, North East Derbyshire District Council said: “North East Derbyshire District Council was aware of the traveller encampment at Killamarsh Sports Centre and worked closely with partner agencies in response to the situation.

“Officers from the Environmental Health Service visited the site on June 15 and arrangements were made, in conjunction with the parish council, who is the land owner, to require the travellers to leave the site safely, which they did.

“After the travellers left on the evening of June 15, the council’s Streetscene team fully cleansed the area.”
