An encampment of travellers on a car park near to the home of Sheffield Wednesday left ahead of Saturday’s game.

The cluster of more than eight caravans and accompanying vehicles appeared at the Hillsborough Park car park, off Parkside Road, on Wednesday (February 1). However, they were soon asked by Sheffield Council for them to vacate in time for the game against Plymouth Argyle yesterday.

It is now understood the encampment abided by the request – which the council says was not a formal one – and had cleared the car park by kick off on February 4.

Wednesday took the game 1-0 against the visitors from Plymouth, and puts the Owls at the top of the division for the first time since September 2021.

Sheffield Council recently outlined a proposed new official site for gypsies and travellers on a spare parcel of land near Crystal Peaks to provide 44 new pitches.
