Floral tributes have started appearing outside the Cherry Street entrance to the Blades’ Bramall Lane stadium, where a shrine has been set up.
One, written by a young supporter, reads: “Hope you know how special you are to us. Baldock best defender in the world.”
Another says: “Rest in peace, George. You were and always will be a legend at the Lane. You will be truly missed. RIP Starman.”
And a third reads: Thank you for the seven years you played for the club. Rest in peace. Keep kicking that football.”
Alongside the flowers are three Sheffield United shirts with the player’s name and the number two which he made his own. The words ‘R.I.P our Starman’ are written on one of the shirts.
George Baldock was tragically found dead in his swimming pool in Greece yesterday evening, Wednesday, October 9.
The defender, who was a senior Greece international had left United for the Athens clubwas Panathinaikos in the summer.
He was a much-loved character during his time at Bramall Lane, where he twice helped the club secure promotion to the Premier League.
Greek police today said there was no evidence that criminal activity had caused his death.
A period of silence is due to be observed before Thursday night’s Nation League match between England and Greece at Wembley, with players on both teams wearing black armbands.
