Facelift for Jess Ennis pillar box after Star raises concerns over state of golden tribute

Famous pillar box spruced up after The Star raises concerns

It is the golden tribute to Sheffield’s golden girl.

And the gold pillar box near Barker’s Pool, which was painted in honour of Jess Ennis after her 2012 Olympic Games heptathlon victory, has been spruced up after concerns were raised over its condition.

Some 14 years after it was created, rust could be seen under the paint, which was also marked by years of unwanted stickers, and the plaque was cracked.

Now, the box appears to have been given a fresh coat of paint to cover over the rust and the stickers - although the plaque is still cracked.

The work has been carried out after The Star asked locals their views on the state of the pillar box carrying Jess’s name, with many of them raising concerns and calling for it to be brought back to its former glory.

Royal Mail has been approached for comment.
