"I met my wife on Cambodia trip and married her nine months later - but now we're struggling to get into UK"

A man who travelled to Cambodia to teach English met and married his wife in nine months is now struggling to get his new family into the UK.

Callum Borysenko, aged 25, from Rotherham, first flew to Cambodia in February 2023 to do an intensive two-week ‘Teach English as a Foreign Language’ course.

After a year of teaching and travelling the country, Callum, from Dinnington, decided he wanted to open a language centre in Siem Reap, and he posted a job advert on Facebook for a receptionist.

His now-wife Nyza, 21, met him for a job interview at a coffee shop in June 2024 and the pair “clicked” straight away.

After only nine months they married, and in August welcomed their son Dalton into the world.

But now, as they prepare to begin the rest of their lives together, they are facing problems securing Nyza’s UK citizenship.

Callum said: “For me to take my family to live in the UK and give my son access to his family, the NHS and free education I would need to sponsor my wife.

“The issue of having to do that is I’d either need £90,000 in savings to sponsor her or I’d need to go to the UK, earning a minimum of £30,000 per year and provide six months’ payslips.

“The problem is being separated and I’m the sole provider.

“Nyza is happy and has her own business that she runs from home but we’re in a position where we’re quite stuck – we want to go to the UK but we can’t."

The pair had a whirlwind romance after meeting at that initial interview, and within a couple of weeks Callum had met Nyza’s entire family.

He proposed six months later on November 6, 2024, in front of Angkor Wat, the biggest religious complex in the world, with Nyza falling pregnant just under a month later.

The pair married in front of 1,000 guests on March 27, 2025 - welcoming their son Dalton now six months, on August 24 2025.

Callum, a secondary English teacher, said: “About a year into my time in Siem Reap I had basically decided I had done with teaching primary and high school English and wanted to open a language centre.

“We - me and my business partner – needed a receptionist and that’s how we basically met.

“I put a job advert on Facebook and met this lovely woman for an interview.

“After finishing up business we went out for a couple of drinks and actually hit the karaoke bars together.

“We really clicked when we met.

“I remember she had her hair done and she wore contact lenses that made her eyes a deep blue colour.

“She was a very gentle, polite person and had a very soft atmosphere around her."

Nyza’s family went to see a psychic two weeks before Callum met them, where the psychic revealed Nyza would date a man that was “not Cambodian”.

In August 2024, Callum visited them for dinner at Nyza’s dad’s house.

He said: “Her dad did speak basic English and basically laid out this big beautiful mat of food all cooked Asian style, and we sat cross legged with multiple bowls of food.

“I was basically given their blessing in the sense they checked me out and made sure I was not a serial killer.

“Our journey then together has been intense – travelling back and forth around Cambodia to the Koh Rong Islands and Phnom Penh and we spent a lot of time knuckling down and building our relationship.

“For the longest time I was not in a relationship and neither was she.

“At the time it felt right for each other”.

Nyza says she first felt “confused” when the pair met as Callum was “so professional”.

She said: “My thought was, ‘this guy wants me to work here so I won’t think about flirting and all that’.

“He’s a very polite man – lovely, caring, protective and serious.

“I just love the way he is.

“I didn’t plan on marrying or dating a foreign guy.

“I was so not into it but suddenly I met him and I thought ‘I can’t get him out of my head’.

“I feel I belong to him”.

Callum is seeking legal advice to find a way to get his family to the UK.
