“It absolutely stunk - I had to wash my car twice”
A major South Yorkshire motorway was shut for hours today after a lorry shed its “rotten, stinking” load on the highway.
And the driver behind the truck caught the entire mess on dashcam footage.
The slip road for the A1(M) northbound at J35, where the motorway leaves the M18 at J2 near Doncaster, was closed for over eight hours on May 28 while crews cleaned up the lorryload.
However, footage now shows the moment the highway was splattered with rotten waste.
Dad Joshua Devlin, 33, from Edenthorpe, Doncaster, was driving his partner to a hair appointment at 11.30am when he tried to join the A1(M) from the M18 slip road.
Footage shows how a large open topped truck then slotted in in front of Josh - but then braked suddenly moments later.
Footage shows how a wave of brown sludge water and chunky waste sloshed over the passenger-side wall of the lorry and splattered on the motorway.
“It absolutely stunk,” Joshua told The Star. “It was vile.
“To be honest, I thought it was all nappy bags at first.
“But I think the bulk of it was rotten fruit and veg, which goes all watery when it rots.
“I was directly behind them and it covered my wheel arches and the side of my car.
“I’ve never smelled anything like it. I can’t describe it. My missus said ‘it’s disgusting, we’ve got to move’.
“But when I tried to pull around the lorry we were going the same speed for the next 30-50 seconds!
“Eventually they pulled over in a layby while I drove my missus to her salon, then I went straight to a garage to wash it off while it was still wet.
“I had to wash it twice.
“When I came back the lorry was still parked in the layby with traffic police around them.
“It was still dripping down the sides of the lorry.
“I can still smell it. I don’t know if there’s a bit leftover on my car or it’s just stuck in my nose.”
The slip road had reopened as of 7pm.
