Killamarsh scrapper faces Tartan challenge

The 22-year-old lightweight plans a hot reception for Lee Connelly in Glasgow.

Flynn, 22, has five straight wins on his record and has already beaten Sheffield’s Qasim Hussain.

He will be a big favourite at the Glasgow City Hotel against Connelly, 28, from Killamarsh.

Connelly (Won 3, Lost 14, Drawn 1) is used to be being the “away fighter” - five out of his last six outings have been outside South Yorkshire.

He has lost all his five fights in 2015 and will be looking to end the year on a high.

But it will be a stiff task against a fighter who won gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last year.

Flynn who says he wants to win a major title within two years is a confident young man. He told the BBC: “”I’ve been saying from when I was wee, continually in the gym, ‘I’m going to be champion of the world’.

“I believe that is what’s going to happen. How long I don’t know, but at the end of the day I know what I want. I’m not in here to be second best.”

Connelly’s last victory came at Barnsley Metrodome in March 2014, when he outpointed Lithuanian Simas Volosinas.

n Light middleweight and Commonwealth title contender Sam Sheedy’s hopes of being selected as a sparring partner for the Billy Joe Saunders in the MGM gym in Marbella turned into disappointment.

Trainer Glyn Rhodes said: “We were asked if we’d go, got all ready but then the call never came to confirm. We were gutted.”

Saunders and Andy Lee box for the WBO World middleweight title in Manchester a week on Saturday.

n David Haye has accused world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury of heaping shame on his sport over his controversial comments since his upset victory over Wladimir Klitschko in Germany.

Fury refused to back down on his claims that the world would end once homosexuality, abortion and paedophilia were legalised.

Former champion Haye returns to the ring after a three-and-a-half year absence in January when he faces Australian fighter Mark de Mori in London, and is hoping to move into the frame for a shot at Fury.

Haye said: “I thought I was the controversial bad guy, but Fury has got to stop saying that.

“Come on man - just shut up. It’s stupid and wrong and it’s giving boxing another negative headline. Stop it. Just stick to singing after the fight - that’s good.”

Almost 80,000 people have signed a petition calling on the BBC to remove Fury from its 12-strong shortlist for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

Fury had previously said that fellow nominee and world heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis-Hill “looks good in a dress” and added: “I know for a million per cent I’ve got more personality in the end of my little finger than the whole of the nomination group put together.”
