A neighbour had battled in vain to help the woman but was beaten back by flames and smoke.

The fire-damaged property was sealed off yesterday as enquiries were carried out to try to determine what caused the blaze.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said the investigation is continuing today.

Three fire engines raced to the scene yesterday and firefighters and police officers remained at the house for most of the day.

Shocked neighbours expressed their sadness at the death of the woman, who has been named locally as Kathleen Khan and who is believed to have been in her 70s.
