Burger chain Wendy’s is planning to open a restaurant in Sheffield city centre - just a few doors down from fast food rivals McDonald’s. The new restaurant in a former phone shop is the company’s first franchise site in the UK as it sets its sights on a northern expansion.

Wendy’s said its initial focus would be on expanding the brand in South Yorkshire before moving into Lincolnshire. The firm is also planning to build a pipeline of restaurants in the Liverpool and Greater Manchester areas.

Under plans submitted to Sheffield Council on behalf of Papas Hospitality Group, the restaurant would occupy part of the basement as well as the ground floor and first floor of the building on Sheffield’s High Street. The application includes a distinctive two-storey glass facade although the upper floors would remain unoccupied.

Wendy’s has not given an official opening date but expects the Sheffield restaurant will open its doors in mid-December. The restaurant will be operated by Square Burgers Limited, the first traditional franchise partner to open a Wendy’s restaurant in the UK.

Abigail Pringle, chief development officer of the Wendy’s Company, said: “British customers have been eagerly asking when Wendy’s is coming to the north, and we’re excited to open a new restaurant in Sheffield soon.

“We’re also thrilled to welcome Square Burgers Limited to the Wendy’s family, the first franchise partner to open a traditional Wendy’s restaurant in the UK. They will be an integral partner as we continue to grow the brand across this region.”
