Hilary Benn tells Sheffield to vote remain and calls EU referendum the '˜most important decision of our lifetime'

Labour's shadow foreign secretary has called the EU referendum the '˜most important decision of our lifetime' on a campaign visit to Sheffield today.

Hilary Benn, MP for Leeds Central, kicked off the final full day of campaigning for the EU referendum with a visit to the city on board the Labour in for Britain Battle bus.

Labour supporters gathered outside the town hall to hear Mr Benn speak.

He said: “We are fighting for every vote. This vote really matters. When you vote for a new parliament you can get rid of them again in the next five years but this will affect the rest of our lives.

“It is a decision that will affect the future of our children and grandchildren.”

Mr Benn said that he was appealing to the people of Sheffield to think about their children’s future when they vote in the referendum tomorrow.

He said: “How are we going to help the next generations to manage and deal with the challenges they face, whether that is conflict, tackling climate change or making the most of new technologies?

“And there are also economic problems if we turn away from the EU. Why would you turn away from your largest customer?

“We need our 27 closest neighbours to help us with the challenges that affect lots of different countries.

And it keeps peace on our continent. Think back to the first world war and the second world war, there is now peace and there has been for 70 years. That is an astonishing achievement. It is a very powerful agreement that we have together.”

“I will trust in the good sense of the British public to vote remain.”
